College of Arts and Sciences

The College of Arts and Sciences is considered to be the general edu­cation provider of the entire University, handling the English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Communication, Legal Management and Psychology departments.

The University of Batangas (formerly known as Western Philippine College) was founded in April 28, 1946. It is situated at the heart of Batangas City. The Western Philippine Colleges saw its first day classes on April 28, 1947 in a small rented house on Rizal Avenue with a roster of 48 students. The first courses offered were Education, Liberal Arts and Commerce.

Currently, the College of Arts and Sciences has earned several accreditations granted by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA) namely: Level IV accreditation status for its Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Level II for the Bachelor of Arts in Communication, and Level 1 for Bachelor of Science in Legal Management and Bachelor of Science in Psychology programs. This indicates the CAS’ commitment of providing high academic quality and relevant professional education through a well-integrated program of activities and processes. The continuous program improvement strategy implemented by the College ensures its graduates to become competitive professionals and leaders both locally and even globally.

Mission


The College of Arts and Sciences is committed to provide students with comprehensive program in general education, science and liberal arts. It develops students’ competencies in areas of Communication, Political Science, Psychology, Legal Management, Human Services, and Multimedia Arts and makes them responsive to social changes, current issues, and developmental trends.

Vision


The College of Arts and Sciences envisions to mold competent, research-driven, service-oriented and technologically prepared professionals and leaders with sound moral values.

Objectives


The College aims to:
1. develop students’ holistic well-being;
2. prepare them to become competent professionals through innovative and flexible modes of instructional delivery;
3. instill in them the value of nationalism and patriotism;
4. increase global awareness, cultural, and gender sensitivity;
5. involve them in various societal and environmental activities through creative works, innovation, and research; and
6. expand students’ involvement in academic and co-curricular activities.

The Bachelor of Arts in Communication program equips students with necessary theoretical framework on the history and processes of communication and mass media, allows them to develop holistic skills in technology-aided interpersonal and cross-cultural communication and exposes them to current trends and practices in organizational and public communication. This program exposes students to the diverse course work in internship and communication studies such as advertising, broadcasting, journalism, communication research and public relations.

The Bachelor of Arts in Political Science program provides the students with the necessary knowledge about political environment and the problems or issues that confront it. Through this course, students are exposed to the world of politics in their preparation for careers in government, public administration of justice, as well as for graduate work in political science and admission to law school.

The Bachelor of Arts/Science in Psychology program is for people who are interested in human behavior. It equips students with necessary knowledge about personality, human development and psychological testing, needed for different career paths of psychology. This comprehensive curricular program includes exposure of students to research, laboratory work and extensive on-the-job training.

The Bachelor of Multimedia Arts program focuses on creativity and innovation in the study of multimedia within a liberal arts context. Through a balance of courses in theory and practice, students develop an understanding of arts and design principles and practical multimedia skills. This combines the study of multimedia technologies, and communications policies, influences and practices with the applied and creative aspects of multimedia production, web development, animation and digital video production.

The Bachelor of Science in Legal Management program provides students with knowledge of the basic principles of law as well as the essential processes governing the Philippine legal system. Aside from being an excellent preparatory course for formal law studies, the program also imparts to students practical knowledge of fundamental management principles. It also gives students a strong background in research, problem solving and analysis.
