UB DE taps UP Open University Experts for Distance Education Training, strengthens digital teaching, learning for all

The University of Batangas (UB) Distance Education (UBDE) department, hosted a strategic training workshop on June 20, 2023, by partnering with experts from the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU).

The workshop, titled “BYAHENG DE: Journeying into the Avenues of Distance Education,” was held at the UB Batangas City Campus and organized in collaboration with the Human Resource Development Office. The event underscores a significant partnership aimed at strengthening UB’s capacity for distance learning.

In his inspirational message, University President Dr. Hernando B. Perez explicitly “expressed his gratitude to the University of the Philippines Open University for the support and assistance they have extended to UBDE”.

The workshop featured two key resource speakers from UPOU’s Center for Open and Digital Teaching and Learning. The first session was led by Dr. Juliet Areta Villanueva, the center’s Deputy Director for Learning Design. Dr. Villanueva’s discussion focused on “Exploring Different Teaching Techniques and Strategies in Distance Education and Principles of ODL,” which included a “think-pair-share” activity for participants.

The afternoon session was led by Mr. Lexter Mangubat, UPOU’s Deputy Director for Educational Media Production. Mr. Mangubat shared his expertise on “technology integration in teaching and learning and interactive learning material development”. His session included a practical activity where participants applied the “12 Principles of Multimedia by Mayer” to their own teaching materials.

Mr. Carl Ivan Villanueva, Director of UBDE, concluded the program. He noted that the training was one of many activities the department had prepared as it geared up for its “pilot academic year”.
