The University of Batangas (UB) conducted a seminar titled “Battle for Sovereignty: The Philippines’ Fight in the West Philippine Sea” on May 17, 2024, at the UB Junior High School (JHS) Learning Resource Center (LRC) to deepen students’ understanding of the country’s maritime dispute with China and foster informed, patriotic, and responsible citizenship.
The seminar explored the legal and historical dimensions of the West Philippine Sea issue, emphasizing the Philippines’ efforts to defend its territorial integrity and maritime rights under international law. Speakers discussed the 2016 Arbitral Tribunal ruling and the ongoing diplomatic challenges in asserting national sovereignty.
Designed to promote national awareness and civic engagement, the event encouraged students to recognize their role in upholding the nation’s sovereignty and supporting peaceful yet principled approaches to maritime defense.
Through comprehensive discussions, participants strengthened their understanding of foreign policy, international law, and national security as they relate to the West Philippine Sea.
