{"id":5903,"date":"2025-10-06T14:38:58","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T06:38:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web2.ub.edu.ph\/ubbc\/?p=5903"},"modified":"2025-10-15T14:45:21","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T06:45:21","slug":"ub-civil-engineering-students-win-quake-resistant-award-at-ideers-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ub.edu.ph\/ubbc\/ub-civil-engineering-students-win-quake-resistant-award-at-ideers-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"UB Civil Engineering students win Quake Resistant Award at IDEERS 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The University of Batangas (UB) stood unfazed alongside other top Philippine universities as its Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) students earned the Quake Resistant Award at the <em>Introducing and Demonstrating Earthquake Engineering Research in Schools <\/em>(IDEERS) <em>2025<\/em>, held on October 1, 2025, at the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE) in Tainan, Taiwan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UB\u2019s student team \u2013 Jhonbert Bartolome, Faye Desiree Dimaculangan, Shannah Allyza Chica, and Myk Hernandez \u2013 competed with their structure named <em>Fortis<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before the competition, Ms. Dimaculangan explained, \u201cAll of us are aware of each member\u2019s responsibilities, so if one of us is absent, we can adapt quickly.\u201d Mr. Bartolome added, \u201cWe move as one, making sure everything is covered\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During <em>Fortis<\/em>\u2019 shaking table test, the team admitted they felt nervous as half of the other structures failed in the first round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlthough we had already tested our model in a shaking table from our organization, we didn\u2019t expect the intensity of the final stages,\u201d Mr. Bartolome shared. He added, \u201cIt was enough for us that <em>Fortis <\/em>made it past other big universities, but by God\u2019s plan, <em>Fortis <\/em>stood until the end.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the competition, the team reflected on their learnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cProper bracing and structural components are needed for a structure to withstand an earthquake,\u201d Mr. Hernandez said, recognizing the close connection between design and resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms. Chica added, \u201cI realized that it\u2019s important to actualize theories and concepts to truly understand the impact of structural design.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teach Coach Engr. Neil Graham Bhel Garcia praised the group\u2019s strengths, particularly their coordination and systemic process in model construction. Over two and half months, the team persevered through three prototypes before finalizing an enhanced model capable of withstanding an 800-gal shaking intensity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUBians are competitive not only at the national level but also internationally\u2013indeed, UB is undeniably the best,\u201d Engr. Garcia said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also stressed the role of civil engineers in earthquake preparedness, especially after the recent 6.9 magnitude earthquake in Cebu, Philippines. \u201cFuture civil engineers must continue studying and innovating structures that can remain unshaken against large-scale earthquakes,\u201d he emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dean of College of Engineering (CoE) Dr. Henry I. Cabatay, Civil Engineering (CE) Department Head Engr. April John Montilla, Computer Engineering (CE) Department Head Engr. Pablo B. Asi, and CE Faculty Engr.
